Launching Milkbank Nigeria: A Lifesaving Initiative for Preterm Babies
Breast Milk for Every Baby in Need
Breast milk is a vital source of nutrition, especially for premature and vulnerable newborns. Yet, many mothers struggle to produce enough milk, leaving their babies at risk. Recognizing this urgent need, Dr. Chinny Obinwanne pioneered Milkbank Nigeria—the country’s first breast milk bank—to ensure that every baby, regardless of circumstances, has access to lifesaving nutrition.
The Heartbreaking Moment That Inspired a Movement
Dr. Chinny’s journey to establishing Milkbank Nigeria began in 2019 when she was contacted about premature triplets whose mother had tragically passed away during childbirth. The babies desperately needed breast milk to survive. Driven by urgency, Dr. Chinny reached out to her community of nursing mothers, and many willingly offered their stored milk. However, ensuring the milk’s safety for fragile newborns requires rigorous testing. Tragically, before donations could be secured, two of the triplets had passed away. This heartbreaking loss strengthened Dr. Chinny’s resolve to create a safe and structured system for breast milk donation in Nigeria.
Why Milkbank Nigeria Matters
- Bridging the Nutrition Gap – Premature babies often require specialized care and nourishment that formula cannot fully provide. Donor breast milk is the closest alternative when a mother’s milk is unavailable.
- Supporting Mothers Facing Challenges – Some mothers experience lactation difficulties due to medical conditions, stress, or premature birth. Having a breast milk bank offers a safety net for both babies and mothers.
- Reducing Infant Mortality – Access to breast milk can significantly increase the survival chances of preterm babies by providing essential nutrients and antibodies that boost immunity.
How Milkbank Nigeria Works
Mothers Helping Mothers—that’s the core of Milkbank Nigeria. The initiative sources breast milk from screened, healthy lactating mothers who voluntarily donate their excess supply. The donated milk undergoes thorough testing and pasteurization before being distributed to hospitals and neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) for babies in need.
A Call to Action
Breast milk donation is a community effort. If you’re a nursing mother with an abundant supply, consider becoming a donor to help save lives. If you’re passionate about supporting maternal and infant health, there are other ways to contribute—whether through advocacy, funding or spreading awareness.
Dr. Chinny’s mission is clear: No baby in Nigeria should suffer or lose their life due to lack of breast milk. With Milkbank Nigeria, this vision is becoming a reality—one drop of milk at a time.
